A smile is priceless.  More than anything material in this world, a simple smile can actually brighten up one’s day or lift up one’s spirit.  A smile may not cost you anything but it can do a lot of things beyond your expectations.  However, due to our negligence, we do things that hinder that certain smile from coming out.  Unfortunately, one of them is periodontal disease.  With such a problem taking place, your smile will be literally and figuratively difficult to share.

Hence, it is best to find an effective treatment for periodontal disease.  But before we delve in into the many possible remedies that you can use for this problem, it is best to be very informed of what the condition is.  By this, we mean that one should know what are the symptoms, causes, and things to take note of when we speak of periodontal disease.  In this way, the person involved would know what exactly to do and even look out for so as to prevent catching the same disease again and again.

So how does exactly periodontal disease come about?  It all actually begins on the food that we eat.  After eating, it is best recommended to clean our mouth by means of tooth brushing or gargling or any other methods available.  This is to remove any particles that can be left off the mouth.  Sadly though, most of us tend to ignore our obligations to our oral cavity thus leaving these food particles stuck.  This allows bacteria (the bad ones) to propagate and develop into plaque.  When there is already plaque existing in our mouth, that is the time when the damage starts to spread.  Such event can be referred to as gingivitis.

Usually, changes in your gums are the best indicators of gum disease.  When you think they look way too different from normal, then something must be terribly wrong.  First, when gums tend to be overly sensitive that it bleeds at the slightest contact while brushing, this means that your gums are weakened.  Also, when your gums show a different color such as brownish or grayish, this means that plaque infestation has worsened.  Healthy gums always have a pinkish tone of color.  If you encounter any of those events, then better be prepared as periodontal disease is working underway.

So how do you treat gum disease?  Simple.  All that it takes is to commit to proper oral hygiene.  As mentioned earlier, negligence to our oral health duties causes food particles to turn into bacteria and develop to plaque.  If we make it a point to clean our mouth consistently, plaque would not exist.  If plaque does not exist, we would not be talking about periodontal disease now.  Thus, a full commitment to oral health and its proper procedures would ensure that any disease would not come to existence.

One of the most common enemies for most people around the globe is gingivitis. It is a very disturbing gum disease that can take a person by surprise. Many treatments are now made available to treat gingivitis but some of these treatments contain different chemicals that are mixed with it, just like those fancy mouthwashes. There are a lot of things at home that can be used as gum disease treatment on the natural way. Some of these natural items can be purchased either at a local grocery store or from a local health food store.

A pinch of salt added to a glass of lukewarm water has been known as an old gum disease treatment. The salt water solution can be used to increase the flow of blood to the gums and ease its swelling. One can use this solution to rinse the mouth twice a day, one time in the morning and one time in the evening.

Essential oils such as lemon, tea tree oil and geranium, are helpful in gum disease treatment. The tea tree oil has been known to be a powerful antiseptic. Adding a drop of this oil on top of the toothpaste before brushing can help ease the inflamed and irritated gums, and can even prevent gum disease. Germanium can be used to make a mouthwash. One drop of germanium, one drop of lemon and one drop of tea tree oil in a half glass of water can be used as a gargle for the mouth. Some essential oils can be fatal for the body, it is best not to swallow any of the mixtures.

Herbs are the best natural cure for gum disease.  They can tone and improve the gum tissues as well as combat infection and soothe ulceration.  Golden seal and Echinea have been known to promote immune defense and create an unfriendly environment for the bacteria. Clove buds can be chewed to calm the toothache, fight with a great number of dental bacteria and assist in small oral wounds healing.

Vitamins and minerals have the capability to treat gum disease. Vitamin C can help rebuild the soft tissues around the gums and improves the integrity of the periodontal tissues. It can provide an additional immune-boosting capability which remarkably reduces bacterial growth. The mineral supplement folic acid can help reduce the inflammation of the gums caused by gum disease. Calcium tablets are also a big help in treating the symptoms of gum disease.

Red gums are a pain to deal with and can signify an even bigger dental problem.  It could be a sign of gum infection or periodontal disease.  If not addressed immediately, it could lead to other serious complications.  You may even lose your teeth in the process.  While bad bacteria aren’t necessarily bad for your dental health, an overgrowth of bad bacteria can cause of accumulation of plaque on your teeth.  This slimy, white substance can harden to tartar which could lead to the eventual destruction of your gum tissues and teeth enamel.  However, gum infection can easily be prevented.

It’s not as hard as you think.  As a matter of fact, it’s a lot easier than curing red gums.  However, it will require some dedication on your part to keep red gums away.  And this starts with maintaining a good oral hygiene.  Brushing your teeth regularly can help prevent red gums.  A quality, soft-bristled toothbrush can remove food particles and tartar from you teeth without hurting your gums.  Flossing, too can help remove food particles which are hard to remove with brushing alone.  However, it is best not to force the floss between your teeth and right to the gumline to prevent it from bleeding.

What you use when you brush, floss and gargle also plays a crucial part in keeping your teeth and gums healthy.  While commercial toothpaste and mouthwash can help maintain the bacteria level, they contain harsh chemicals like SLS and alcohol which could irritate your gums and cause infection in your mouth.  Opt for toothpaste and mouthwash with natural ingredients.  These dental health products can help clean the mouth and maintain the low bacteria count on your gums and teeth without causing irritation.  You can even make one on your own.  Try substituting your regular mouthwash with a salt and warm water concoction or unsweetened cranberry for an all-natural mouthwash.

Diet, too, can help prevent gum infections.  A diet rich in fruits and vegetables can help boost immune system, strengthen bones and teeth and keep your gums looking healthy and coral pink.  Opt for crunchy fruits like apples and pears as this has high water content which flushes away the acids as well sugar and fibers which help clean your teeth.  Dairy products like cheese and milk also help provide calcium and phosphorous which strengthen teeth enamels and keep them protected from tooth decay.  However, food rich in sugar, starch and fats are to be avoided or at least minimized as sugar and fats promote the growth and health of bad bacteria in the mouth.
